Today I had the opportunity to attend a lecture by Sir Howard Morrison KC on the topic of “The International Rule of Law in a Changing World Order”.
The occasion was the annual Gordon Wilson Lecture held at my school, Shimna Integrated College, in honour of the celebrated peace campaigner and supporter of the College in its early days.
Sir Howard is a former UK Judge at the International Criminal Court where he served as President of the Appeals Division. Prior to that he was the UK Judge at the United Nation International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, a UK Circuit Court Judge and defence counsel on Balkan and Rwandan international criminal trials.
Sir Howard is a visiting Professor of Law at Leicester, Warwick and Northumbria Universities and a Senior Fellow of the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law at Cambridge University. He is currently the President of the Appeals Court of the British Indian Ocean Territories. Sir Howard also teaches counter-terrorism judges and lawyers in Iraq.
This August 2022 article in Counsel Magazine provides additional information about Sir Howard’s upbringing, early career, and recent work with Ukraine.
